The protection of national minorities and the perspectives of the Republic of Serbia’s EU integration

Abstract
The issue of minority protection is very important in EU enlargement process. However, the EU body law in this field does not exist and the EU practice is not comprehensive, even though the issue has been given high rank. The author investigates whether Serbia's EU accession process brings a new quality to the protection of national minorities and how this issue has been treated so far. The conclusion is that the Republic of Serbia has significantly improved the protection of national minorities since the adoption of the Action Plan for Chapter 23 and the Action Plan for the realization of the rights of national minorities in 2016. Nevertheless, at the same time the protection of national minorities in the context of Serbia's EU integration was and remains a somewhat controversial issue, and the conditions and requirements can be expected in that process that go beyond the framework of international legal protection of national minorities.
