Ideology and identity in the novel Čizmaši by Dragoslav Mihailović

Abstract

This paper explores the linguistic and stylistic features of male speech in the novel the language used by male characters, with particular attention given to the use of slang, vulgarisms, and profanity. These elements are examined as tools of characterization and as means of expressing social background, emotional states, and resistance within the oppressive post-war Yugoslav context. The study highlights how the author employs authentic male speech patterns to enhance the realism of the narrative and to portray the psychological and societal struggles of individuals facing political repression. Ultimately, the paper underscores the importance of language in the construction of masculine identity and in the broader depiction of historical and cultural realities. the use of obscene and vulgar words, more precisely expressive vocabulary with a high degree of negative expressiveness, as well as argot, jargon, but also lexical fund characteristic of the professions of soldiers, miners, boxing terminology, etc. Deictic (referential) words are a characteristic replacement, especially for lexemes that denote some kind of social taboo, and by avoiding naming a phenomenon, its invocation in reality is avoided. Terminological vocabulary is not otherwise characteristic of the literary and artistic func s work, terms become a means of additional stylistic nuance, as their expressive value lies in the touch of basic and contextual meaning. The degree of literary stylization is greater in relation to dialectal language, sociolects and jargon. The use of each of the idiolects is carried out tendentiously, taking into account the stylistic impression of escribes the real fates of so-called ordinary people who were the subject of realistic creators, the way he does this through linguistic shaping, with newly found words, is utterly innovative.
