Scholars exploring the Ukrainian traditional music have consistently drawn parallels between the evolution of Ukrainian culture and its music, suggesting an intrinsic connection between the two. In particular, chordophones-stringed instruments are seen as quintessential to the Ukrainian musical heritage. Among them, the bandura stands out as an indispensable symbol of Ukraine's instrumental tradition.
However, much of the literature surrounding the bandura is colored by passion and political undertones, often resulting in incomplete or skewed analyses. As such, the aim of our research is to offer a more holistic view of the bandura, examining it from multiple perspectives: its historical and cultural context, its evolution and construction, its role in Ukrainian music, and the unique techniques employed in playing it.
In addition, we sought to broaden the scope of our investigation by incorporating international sources and the wealth of information available online. Our findings affirm that the bandura transcends the realm of traditional Ukrainian music, emerging as a powerful symbol of Ukraine's cultural identity- both in its past and present musical landscape.
